Flywheels are a relatively simple devise yet they are responsible for many different functions of a vehicle. One is allowing the power from the engine to be transmitted to the drivetrain by connecting it to the clutch and transmition, the other is as an energy storage device.
The most significant factor to consider when looking at aftermarket flywheels is weight. The lighter the flywheel is, the less energy will be required to spin it. The less energy required to spin the flywheel means more of it is transmitted to the ground.
Lighter is not always better though. If you go too light you will lose some of the driveablity that a heavier flywheel provides. Engines with super light flywheels will spin up and down the rev range extremely quickly often making techniques such as "heel-toe" shifts much more difficult.
